It seems more and more we hear the jingle "every kiss begins with KAY". Am I the only one offended by these ads? Being a married woman; happily most days, I find these ads insulting to my husband and to myself. Personally, I don't need someone telling my husband what I want, HE SHOULD KNOW!
There is a local commercial that runs this time of year for a local jeweler, the ad goes something like this "He got a new rifle for hunting, don't you deserve some diamonds?" OH MY GOSH! SERIOUSLY? What on earth does one thing have to do with the other?
Beyond all of that, what about the current state of the economy? With so many unemployed and barely scraping by to maintain their homes what is the purpose of such an extravagant gift except to further push more people into debt they can't afford just because they have "good credit"
In reality here in Michigan there are still MANY people unemployed, sure the statistics are falling, but that isn't because people have found work it is simply because they have run out of benefits from the unemployment agency. It isn't that people don't want to work either, its simply an employers market and hardly any job pays more then minimum wage and only wants to work people part time with no benefits, how is someone supposed to support a family like that, let alone buy diamonds for his significant other for Christmas!
Please don't get me wrong I am all for freedom of the press and marketing in whatever a manner a company feels fit to do so. In reality however how many people feel some sort of guilt do to these advertisements? How many men feel obligated to spend money they just don't have because of them? How many women actually care about diamonds when their livelihood, homes and food are on the line?
