My Life as a Fairytale

Not so very long ago and not to far away in glass castle lived a sweet young prince. This prince was charming and loyal to his duties. He worked hard every day to make sure everything was just right in the kingdom as he disliked disorder and change very much. So when he was told there would be a new princess coming to the castle he threw a great fit.

Her first day in the castle he was cold and distant to her, hoping to scare her away. He had no need for yet another princess around him as he repeatedly told the court jester and chief councilor to the king. She tried so hard to be nice and polite to the young prince but he was having no part of her. She grew more determined then ever to win him over and make him her friend.

Time went by slowly as the prince became accustomed to the princess's presence. He became comfortable while remaining aloof and standoffish toward her. The chief councilor and jester both assured the princess that it had nothing to do with her but more that the prince was just that way.

After quite a few months of working together the prince and princess found common ground through chili dogs. It was a castle tradition to have chili dogs brought in from a small village on the outskirts of the kingdom. The princess adored chili dogs as did the prince, they talked as they ate and learned they had much, much more in common. A friendship grew that was guarded with secrecy from the prying eyes of the jester and chief councilor.

The prince and princess remained friends through her entire stay at the castle. They grew closer and closer over the years she was there, they learned to appreciate each other and learned they had so much in common that they should have been fast friends long before.

One day before the prince even had a chance to say goodbye the princes was whisked away back to her own kingdom far away from the prince. She was sorrowful to leave before she could say goodbye but the evil sorcerer had convinced the chief councilor and the king that the princess had to leave. The prince upon hearing the news attempted to find the princess, to warn her of the evil doings of the sorcerer, but she had already gone.

The prince and princess exchanged letters for a little while after the separation; however, the princess had run away to another land to escape a terrible fate that had befallen her in her kingdom. The prince desperately searched for her to no avail, he was sad. He missed his friend and longed to hear her laughter once again. The princess in the mean time was missing him just as much, rarely a day passed without a thought of her sweet prince's smile.

Two years had passed when the princess returned to the village at the outskirts of the prince's kingdom. She went to the market and while wandering the wares she saw him! Her prince was standing a short distance away from her, she forgot all of her manners and walked boldly up to him and said "Hello stranger" with a devious smile. The prince's smile gave him away; she could tell he was just as excited to see her with his fumbling for words. He shuffled his feet just like a schoolboy with his first crush; this made her heart smile broadly. They exchanged ways of contact, promised to keep in touch and said their goodbyes.

Time went on and on the prince and princess kept the promise to remain in contact. They would visit and reminisce as often as possible of the days gone past. They shared laughter and tears, joy and fear, happiness and frustration over those days spent in the company of a familiar friend. It was so comfortable that they would complain openly about their lives and the evils of the world in which they both lived. All the while, the princess knew in her heart he was meant for her and it only became more and more obvious through those talks.

The princess was attending a jousting festival in her little village that she loved so much one evening alone. As she sat in the spectator's box, she pondered her life and wondered why she was there without an escort. She thought and thought about the days gone by and wished for someone to share things with; she was lonely and tired of all the suitors that beckoned at her door. She longed for one that would understand and someone to share her life with. She stared off into the starry night and all of a sudden, it hit her, her prince! She knew she must contact him right away; he was the only one she knew that would understand her plight.

She reached out through a simple message and the reply came quickly with a resounding "YES!" The princess's heart leaped with joy! They made plans to meet.

The prince arrived in his white carriage, "how fitting" she thought to herself with a girlish giggle. They visited and had a grand time laughing and teasing each other just like no time had passed between them. The prince could barely stop staring at her and the princess just sat in wonder that this great man would look at her in such a fashion. The prince was wary of the others attending the gala and thought there were suitors present by the way the pranced around her, he did not notice her eyes were only on him.

The prince decided to send a message to the princess, he put his intentions and ideas about them in it, he sent it and waited. He still saw her occasionally and they spent many hours in happy laughter, but she never responded to the message he had sent. The prince began to get discouraged. The princess unaware of the message the prince had sent wondered why he had become aloof and distant with her once again.

Months passed by so quickly and the princess had become so distracted with intrusions that she had failed to open her mail in months. She realized her error and quickly sat down to read her mail, she saw the letter addressed from her prince and wondered how in the world she could have missed one of his prized notes to her. She read it, then re-read it, she looked at the date over and over again, tears sprung to her eyes and she was unsure of what to do or say. The letter told her of his intentions with her, she could read between the lines of those simple words and knew his heart was hers if she had wanted it back then. She wondered if she were to late, what he would think of her simple oversight and if he still felt the same way. She decided to wait and not say anything to him about it, after all of this time she was sure that her lack of response had left him with an idea that just wasn't so.

A few more months passed by and the winter storms came and went, mornings spent with her prince visiting over coffee were priceless to her and made her heart ache with her secret. It was one such day that she decided to tell him everything, but not so boldly as to tell him to his face. She wrote him a note and sent it away.

His reply came swiftly, they talked for hours on end about what this could possibly mean for the two friends. How would they work out being together when so much friendship had lain between them for so long. They decided to let things be as they would be, armed with the knowledge they both now held they moved forward into the unknown. The friendship flourished, looks became longer, time was never enough and they both knew in their hearts where they belonged.

One night the princess had returned to her little castle to find the fools lost in folly. She sent an urgent message for the prince to come and help her with getting them under control. He came quickly. They were in full celebration when the prince arrived. He helped the princess tend to the banter and taunting of their silliness toward each other. The princess always enjoyed when the fools acted their nature and the prince found humor in them as well. The night lingered on and the princess tired, she took a position with the prince on a pillow and dosed peacefully.

The prince watched her sleep softened face for hours. He finally stole a moment and touched her hair gently, she smiled in her sleep, his heart leaped to his throat. He stroked her face and her eyes fluttered open. When she looked into his eyes the kiss was on her heart, they looked deeply into each others souls and lingered there for what seemed like an eternity. The moment was not lost on the royal pair, they knew that the time was upon them and that they had forever been transformed.

The prince asked for her hand and she happily said yes. The fools jumped and clapped and the tiniest dancers rejoiced with a happy tune! The prince took the princess's hand as they watched the happy revelry, the princess just smiled and giggled. The sun shone brightly upon them with their court in tow.

There they remained happily ever after in a castle made of friendship and love.

The end.

  1. Is this YOUR true story?

I love it! It's beautiful...and very real to modern day (except for the castles and the fact that they are royalty and all).

  2. Yes this is my true life fairly odd tale! I read it to the kids the night of our wedding reception around a fire, it was super fun!
